The Haunting
Established in 1854, Oak Grove Cemetery holds more than a century and a half of Coldwater history…and some believe traces of that history still linger among its graves. The cemetery is divided into two sections by U.S. 12, both standing high above the surrounding Messenger and Hodunk chain of lakes. Its earliest recorded burial predates the cemetery itself: the son of Potawatomi leader Baw Beese was reportedly laid to rest near Loran Marsh’s trading post around 1832. Other early graves were later moved here from Coldwater’s former Pioneer Cemetery.
Among those remembered at Oak Grove is Old Sam, a Civil War artillery horse who served alongside the soldiers of Loomis’ Battery. After surviving years of battle, Sam returned home to Coldwater and spent the rest of his life taking part in Decoration Day parades with local veterans. When he died in 1876, those who had served beside him reportedly carried him into Oak Grove under the cover of darkness and buried him within the cemetery grounds.
Some of Oak Grove’s most unsettling stories come from the historic north section. At the bottom of a large, bowl-shaped depression stands an old receiving vault built into the hillside. Before modern equipment made winter burials possible, bodies were stored inside until the frozen ground softened enough for graves to be dug. Today, visitors approaching the vault have reported sudden chills, goosebumps and the unmistakable sensation that someone—or something—is watching from among the surrounding graves. Photographs taken near the structure have even appeared to show misty, humanlike figures hovering nearby.

Opportunities for visitors:
Visitors may explore Oak Grove Cemetery on their own during regular operating hours, including the historic north section where much of the reported activity has occurred. While the cemetery does not currently offer scheduled ghost tours or investigations, special events or organized visits outside normal hours may be possible with advance permission from the City of Coldwater.

Oak Grove remains an active cemetery and a place of remembrance. Visitors should remain on established roads and pathways whenever possible, avoid disturbing graves or memorials and respect any services taking place during their visit.
