The Haunting
At the Calumet Theatre, the final curtain may not mean the performance is over.
Opened in 1900 at the height of the Copper Country’s mining boom, the Calumet Theatre welcomed some of the era’s most celebrated performers, including Sarah Bernhardt, John Philip Sousa, Douglas Fairbanks Sr. and renowned Shakespearean actress Madame Helena Modjeska. More than a century later, some believe Modjeska still commands the theatre’s stage…and occasionally helps other actors remember their lines.
During a 1958 performance of The Taming of the Shrew, actress Adysse Lane reportedly forgot her lines and looked toward the balcony. There, she saw a pale figure resembling Modjeska, who silently supplied the missing words. Modjeska has since become known as the theatre’s resident spirit.
Other visitors and staff have reported unexplained music drifting from empty rooms, sudden cold spots and shadowy figures moving through the historic theatre. A ghost light continues to glow on its darkened stage, traditionally left burning when a theatre is empty, but perhaps the Calumet Theatre never truly is.
The building has also witnessed darker moments in local history. A backstage fire nearly destroyed the theatre in 1918, and after the 1913 Italian Hall Disaster, the building reportedly served as a temporary morgue for the victims. Do echoes of those events remain within its walls, or is Madame Modjeska simply waiting in the balcony for the next performance to begin?
